Exercising Your Creativity: How Practice and Consistency Lead to Growth

We’ve all heard the phrase, "practice makes perfect." It’s a saying that resonates with many aspects of life, and creativity is no exception. Like any skill, creativity thrives on consistent practice, exploration, and a willingness to push beyond the usual boundaries. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just starting out, regularly exercising your creative muscles is key to improvement and discovery.

For me, the past month has been this wonderful return to both art challenges and Artist Dates. These practices have always played a pivotal role in my artistic journey, but it had been a while since I dedicated time to either one. In September, I finally made the decision to embrace both, and it's remarkable how they not only re-energized me but also helped me grow as an artist.

The Power of the Artist Date

One of the highlights of my creative journey this month was an Artist Date to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, a place that never fails to inspire. Immersing myself in the rich history and stunning architecture of the museum felt like a dialogue between the past and the present. From the ornate arches and intricate tilework to the peaceful garden courtyard, every detail was a feast for the eyes and soul. I was so in awe of the craftsmanship which sparked fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose in my own work.

These moments of quiet reflection in spaces that exude artistry reminded me of the importance of stepping away from the studio, allowing inspiration to come from the world around me. It’s in these moments that we reconnect with the essence of why we create in the first place.

Challenge Yourself: September’s Art Prompt Challenge

In tandem with my Artist Date, I also took part in a September prompt challenge, something I hadn’t done in a while. The daily prompts pushed me to think quickly, sketch loosely, and tap into the playful side of my art. What surprised me most was how the act of showing up daily to sketch—even when I didn’t feel like it—sparked new ideas and unlocked creative doors I hadn’t anticipated.

In many ways, it was the combination of setting a goal, showing up consistently, and allowing myself the freedom to create without judgment that got me to the finish line.

Lessons Learned

What I learned through both my Artist Date and the challenge is this: Creativity flourishes when you make it a habit. Just like exercising our bodies keeps us fit and strong, exercising our creativity keeps our ideas flowing and our skills sharpened. It’s not about waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect idea. Instead, it’s about showing up, practicing, and allowing yourself to grow, one small step at a time.

If you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, I encourage you to try your own version of an Artist Date or a creative challenge. It could be as simple as taking your sketchbook to a local park or committing to a daily doodle. Whatever it is, remember that the act of doing is far more important than the outcome. Your creativity is a muscle—keep exercising it, and you’ll be amazed at the places it can take you.
